Prince Hans-Adam of Liechtenstein is able to look at the modern nation-state from many different angles: as a head of state; as a politician, who had to win popular votes in a direct democracy; as a businessman active in different continents; and as an historian who has studied the influence of military technology, transportation and the economy on the workings of the state.
The State in the Third Millennium analyzes the forces that have shaped human history in the past and are likely to do so for the foreseeable future. These include religions, ideologies, military technology and economics. Prince Hans-Adam explores ways to make the traditional democratic constitutional state both more democratic and more efficient. He also discusses strategies on how to realise worldwide the modern democratic constitutional state in the third millennium. He observes that citizens should no longer be viewed as servants of the state, but rather that states be converted into benevolent service companies which serve the people as their customers.
This is an elegant, original and lucidly argued work which will attract all students and observers of modern statecraft.

A Classic
By Merrell T. Denison
The table of contents for The State in the Third Millennium covers a broad series of topics, education, currencies, welfare, etc., and I fully expected to agree with some, and to disagree with others. That was not the case. Prince Hans-Adam has thoughtfully considered the issues of statecraft from the rather unique vantage point of a head of state, and I found myself in concurrence with all of his conclusions. The book begins with an excellent history of statecraft including the legitimacy afforded past states by religion, then discusses the inadequacy of representative democracy codified in the U.S. Constitution compared with the direct democracy of Switzerland or Liechtenstein, which affords the populace the advantage of voting out unpopular legislation enacted by legislators. Missing from many explanations of the financial meltdown of 2008, often blamed on market failure or greed of businessmen, is the succinct and correct statement by the Prince “Financial failure is not a failure of the market, but a failure of the state, its laws, regulations, and its supervision.”
The U.S. Constitution did not give legislators the authority to enrich themselves or their friends and family at the expense of the citizens, but neither did it prevent cronyism from taking place, and it has from the beginning of the country. We have deteriorated into an oligarchy and borrowed to the point of potential default. Prince Hans-Adam did not elaborate a strategy for implementing “direct democracy”, but the idea deserves consideration. Voters are far more capable of understanding and voting on a specific law, than on assessing the character and competency of a legislator, particularly when party politics provides only two or three choices.

Excellent
By John R Messerschmidt
The book is beautifully crafted and built to last. The author's writing is elegant, efficient, and crystal clear. He uses a comprehensive knowledge of history and years of practical experience to arrive at workable structures for civilized society. Although their confederations have suffered severe damage in the twentieth century, the U.S.A. and the C.H. are used as models. Any solution will have to be able to reverse the cultural degeneration of the last hundred years. The apostle Paul and the prophet Isaiah would prescribe a more patriarchal arrangement.

Very Much Worth Reading
By S. Daniel
At its heart this book is revolutionary, which seems a strange thing to say about a book written by an aristocrat. Prince Hans-Adam, by virtue of his position in the Liechtenstein princely house, has had the opportunity to observe world events from a unique perspective. Given responsibility quite early in life for rebuilding the Liechtenstein economic situation that had been nearly destroyed by WWII and the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe, he helped to steer the Principality into a situation of abundance through direct democracy -- which again seems like a peculiar term to use about a monarchy, but when you read the book you will see exactly what that term means to him and how it works. The insights and suggestions he offers are original, provocative, and offer a fascinating prospect for reordering governments into something that actually works for human beings. Set aside any preconceived notions of what might be in this book. Give it a try and you will find much food for thought.
