About the Author
Oliver Benjamin is the founder of Dudeism, a modern religion based primarily upon Taoism which uses the Coen Brothers' 1998 film The Big Lebowski as its main liturgical vehicle. Aside from being a writer, Benjamin is also a musician, a graphic artist, and quite possibly the laziest man in Los Angeles county.

The best parts are the ones from 7000 years ago

The Tao Te Ching translation gives a lot of insight into the mentality that inspired dudeism but honestly I'd skip the rest. The "Dude De Ching" segments are pretty nonsensical unless you've had too many White Russians or smoked one too many jays. as a dudeist priest myself I wish that not everything "original" in this book had to be a quote from the film... Could've toned it down just a hair and given it some real practical and congruent meaning. But that's just like my opinion man...

The Dudist translation is often cumbersome but there are moments when it shines bright, even when it's not enlightening it's still entertaining. Benjamin's accompanying translation of the Tao Te Ching is the hidden gem of this book, it's easy to understand and makes this classic text accessible.

I've been enamored with The Tao Te Ching for most of my life. This modernized interpretation of the classic makes a nice addition to my collection of translations.
