In 1026, Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni raided the Hindu temple of Somanatha (Somnath in textbooks of the colonial period). The story of the raid has reverberated in Indian history, but largely during the raj. It was first depicted as a trauma for the Hindu population not in India, but in the House of Commons. The triumphalist accounts of the event in Turko-Persian chronicles became the main source for most eighteenth-century historians. It suited everyone and helped the British to divide and rule a multi-millioned subcontinent.
In her new book, Romila Thapar, the doyenne of Indian historians, reconstructs what took place by studying other sources, including local Sanskrit inscriptions, biographies of kings and merchants of the period, court epics and popular narratives that have survived. The result is astounding and undermines the traditional version of what took place. These findings also contest the current Hindu religious nationalism that constantly utilises the conventional version of this history.

About the Author
Romila Thapar is Emeritus Professor in History at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has served as visiting professor at Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania and is currently the Kluge Chair in Countries and Cultures of the South at the Library of Congress. Among her previous books are Ashoka and the Decline of the Mauryas, Indian Tales, and The Penguin History of Early India: From the Origins to AD 1300.

Great History of an even that was almost lost

Thapar writes, "This book is an attempt to explore the interpretation of one event that has been projected in the last two centuries as central to the relations between two communites in South Asia, the Hindu and the Muslim..." It is a narrow topic that Thapar targets, but in that it is a moment in history that has almost been lost, I'm glad she has given it her full attention and her erudite pen. The event in question is the rading of Somanatha Hindu temple by the Sultan of Ghazni in the 11th century. The subsequent accounts of this event lasted all the way to the British colonial rule of India 8 centuries later. The Somanatha raid is a critical topic for post-colonial discourse, as is the book for anyone interested in this field.

Best Researched Book on an important event

Society owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Romila Thapar for this extraordinary book. It is difficult for words to fully describe the immense value this book has added to the field of history. Thapar points out that it was the British, who first used the embellished accounts of the Turko-Persian writers to make Sultan Mahmud's 1026 raid on the Somanatha temple into an issue, in order to further their divide-and-rule-policy in the sub-continent. Today, the right wing extremists use these accounts to further their own agenda.
Thapar's scholarly research details the numerous contradictions and exaggerations in the Turko-Persian writers' narratives on the subject of the Sultan's raid. She points out that the Turko-Persian narratives differ with each other even on the central aspect of the destroyed icon. Was the destroyed icon the Arabian idol Lat, or was it the Arabian Manat, or was it the Indian Shiv Ling? Was it hollow, or was it solid? Was it made of stone, or was it made of metal? Was it anthromorphic, or was it anicon? Which one was it?
Thapar then walks the reader through the more reliable Sanskrit sources and local beliefs, which contradict the Turko-Persian narratives. Follow Thapar's enchanting journey, searching for the truth - through temple inscriptions, Jaina temple documentation, real estate deeds, government excavation findings of the temple - giving temple's size, construction material, dating of construction, and more. This is without a doubt one of the most fascinating, and captivating book you will ever read - an absolutely mesmerizing must-read for everyone.
