About the Author
Since 1973, Rick has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 20,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of a hardworking, well-traveled staff of 100 at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle. When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his partner Trish, son Andy, and daughter Jackie.

Really Must Protest!
By Copper Cavalier
Rick Steves is a wonderful travel writer, and his travel books are the only ones I read. Compared to other popular travel books which are dry and dull, Rick's books are like chatting with an old friend who has just returned from a fascinating journey.
However, I really must protest one gigantic oversight! I originally bought the 2010 version of this book. Instead of giving any useful or interesting information about Heidelberg, Rick totally dismisses the town, claiming it is too commercialized. Except for three negative sentences, there is no other information about Heidelberg in the entire book.
I have lived in Germany since 2011 and travelled extensively all over the country. I have visited Heidelberg more than a dozen times, and it is actually one of my favorite towns in all of Germany! Each time I go, I try and figure out what Rick Steves has against this town. I can find nothing!
The town of Heidelberg is gorgeous, with amazing architecture, a lively pedestrian center, and the famous castle towering over the town. There is nothing more commercial about this town than any other I have visted in Europe, and I have never seen his "hordes of Amercians", either.
I felt so strongly about his comments that I wrote to Rick Steves directly in 2012. I received a nice reply thanking me for my suggestions. But the new 2017 version of this book still has the exact same text as it did in 2010!
Meanwhile, if you do come to Germany, try to visit Heidelberg if you have a chance. The lovely architecture and gorgeous views are not to be missed!

Absolutely Blown Away by This Book, A+++!!!
By MySonsMother
This book is so amazing, I can't even begin to tell you! But I'll try.
First of all, small stuff first: I love the size of this book. I love that it's small, but big at the same time - trust me, I know that makes no sense but you'll see what I mean when you get yours. Also, I LOVE the colored maps at the beginning of the book. So helpful for a quick overview - "Where is Berlin in reference to Munich?"(Don't judge, I'm terrible with geography) - Easy answer, quick look at the front of the book! Another thing, this book has a fold out map at the back. I wouldn't have ever imagined that a book of this size would have the space to include a map, but it does! I'm so glad I didn't purchase a separate map, which I almost did. This was a nice surprise (I'm sure it mentions it in the product description but I definitely didn't even read that, I just blindly purchased this book because of a recommendation I received)!!
OK, now onto the content of the book. I love the way this book is laid out - by city. I will be traveling to Munich only, so it was nice to be able to flip to the tab marked "Munich" and be able to read everything about the city. I love the way Rick Steves presents his information. He gives you details and occasionally throws in some history about what he's explaining as well. As someone that loves history and stories, I truly appreciated these details. I'm also going to visit this city with zero prior knowledge, so the education of the city's history and surrounding towns was excellent to read.
The information that I appreciated the most was the "City Walk" and the "Day Trips".
The City Walk is where Rick shows a map of the city, with numbers and dots connecting the numbers where you can walk through the city in a way to give yourself a self-guided tour of the city. After the map he includes detailed explanations and history of each numbered spot on the map (ex: 'The market is a lively world of produce stands and budget eateries. Browse your way through the stalls and pavilions...'), as well as information on how exactly to get from the spot you're at to the next location on the map (ex: 'Leave St Peter's out the door opposite the one you entered and head downhill to...'). I think I will try and do this exact City Walk when I visit, it sounds like it's not too terribly long.
The Day Trips is where Rick explains sights to go see that are a "day trip away." This is perfect for my use as I will only be in this city for a short amount of time, so having the option and ideas for things to do outside the city if we'd like to explore is fantastic. I won't have the luxury to be able to explore far distances from Munich, so knowing what is a short distance away will be extremely beneficial. He also explains how to get to each sight and ways to make it as cost-effective as possible. This is something I very much appreciated.
He also gives general advice about all different aspects of travel, as well as specifics in regards to certain tourist destinations. For example, I intend to visit the BMW museum and wanted to take the factory tour as well. I read the section in this book about BMW and it said "Make sure to book reservations at least 2 months in advance for a factory tour, for reservations call..." What a life saver!!!! I called IMMEDIATELY and booked. Thank goodness I did because I will only be there for 3 days (and only 2 of those days they offer tours) and one of the days was already fully booked!!! I am already incredibly thankful to Rick Steves for this information.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone looking to travel to Germany. Fantastic advice, great travel tips, amazing details, thorough explanations, and insider information that I wouldn't have had access to elsewhere. Rick Steves really knows his stuff and I'm truly thankful for this book.

Great Travel Guide for Planning
By Dan B
We recently visited Germany and were looking for a good travel guide to take along. We purchased this and the Lonely Planet Germany guide (Lonely Planet Germany (Travel Guide). Even though they are bulky and heavy, we ended up taking both along. The Lonely Planet had more information about some of the smaller towns we visited off the beaten path. It also had a really good section on Berlin. This book had a GREAT section on Munich and Bavaria (where we spent a significant amount of time).
As always, Rick Steves' book provides some great advice and steered us to some wonderful stops along the way. His dry humor sprinkled throughout the book made a boring travel guide easier to get through when we were planning out trip. Additionally, the layout and format made it easy to navigate.
If you're only making a few stops in big cities, I recommend checkingt o see if he has one for the area you're visiting and purchasing that instead (Rick Steves Pocket Munich & Salzburg).
