Inaccurate, out-dated information

I would give it 1-star had the Physiology section not been as good as it is. However, the Pharmacology section is extremely out-dated. In fact, most citations come from the late 1980s, early 90s. For a book published in 2005, that is unacceptable.... especially in a content area that evolves so quickly. I find it hard to believe that this information was even up-to-date in 2005.
I find myself starting to read a chapter, such as the antibiotics chapter, and stopping after just one page due to the inaccurate information they are presenting. For learning pharmacology, anesthesia or non anesthesia-related, I would stick to other, more accurate books: Goodman & Gilman's, Miller's Anesthesia.
In terms of Physiology, this book does an excellent job. However, this book intends to cover both topics. Unfortunately, it only gets half the job done.

Mandatory Resource, but only Half Useful

For anyone attempt an anaesthetic primary examination, Stoelting is a mandatory resource for pharmacology.
It is an unfortunate reality that all pharmacology texts disagree with one another in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. At least in Australia, Stoelting is taken to be the examination reference. It also thus plays the role of a de facto syllabus: material in Stoelting is much more likely to be examined, and material not covered in Stoelting less so.
For this reason, it is indispensible for exam candidates and I would strongly advocate having your own copy. In the end, it is a worthwhile investment given the amount of flesh you already have on the line.
However, I offer two significant points of caution:
(a) DO NOT buy the "mini" Stoelting (Handbook of Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice). It does not have the detailed information required for the exam. I started with the "mini" Handbook but, thankfully, realised that it was not up to par and bought the full text in time to prepare.
(b) IGNORE the physiology section of the text. It is useless. I think of Stoelting exclusively as a pharmacology text, and seek better resources for physiology (Brandis' excellent private publication "The Physiology Viva"... do an Internet search for it; Principles of Physiology for the Anaesthetist, Second edition; and Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology, 24th Edition (LANGE Basic Science))
I've only given Stoelting 3 stars, in spite of its being indispensible, because it isn't always logical in its layout. It is also 5-10 years behind current practice and tends to over-emphasise what was state of the art in 1995. However, that is probably a flaw intrinsic to all textbooks. I would also have liked it to be more clinical / practical in its approach.
I definitely recommend you buy it, though. And best of luck.
